This checklist was developed for a 1997 Maule M-7-235C from the factory checklist. It includes additional items for STC'd items, such as the approval for use of auto fuel. It is published here for information purposes only, and should not be used for any other aircraft without careful reference to the FAA approved documents for that aircraft.
Flight Log and Clearance Sheets
This document contains two different sheets. The first is a form which meant to be used to organize the gathering of information and clearance prior to and during flight. The second is a log form designed to capture aircraft usage data. Both are copyrighted, but permission is granted for individual, non-commercial use by pilots who have downloaded them from this site. For optimal use on a knee board, duplex print each sheet head to tail, cut into 5.5" x 8.5" sheets, and fold in half vertically, so that each sub-form appears separately as a single page.
Pre-Solo Written Test
This document contains a pre-solo written test designed to meet the requirements of FAR 61.87(b), with special emphasis on flight rules and procedures applicable to the Anchorage, Alaska area. It is tailored to Merrill Field and Birchwood Airport, but would be suitable for use at any Anchorage bowl airport. Instructors operating elsewhere may still find the test useful as an example, and a basis for developing thier own test tailored to their operating environment.
Private Pilot Pre-Practical Test Summary
This is a form meant to be completed by a student pilot and their instructor immediately prior to the Private Pilot Practical Test. It summarizes the student's flight experience in a manner that helps insure that the student has complied with the FAR 61.109 requirements for the Private Pilot - Airplane certificate.
Carbon Monoxide Article
This was prepared in October, 2001, for the FAA Alaska Region Pilot Letter. It is a short article on carbon monoxide (CO) from a cockpit perspective, and contains information not readily available in the pilot literature. In particular, it challenges the practice of using CO detectors designed for other environments in the cockpit.
Runway Incursions Article
This was prepared in May, 2001, for the FAA Alaska Region Pilot Letter. An abbreviated version appeared in the Merrill Field Bulletin in June, 2001. It is a short article on runway incursions that emphasizes that pilots, aircraft owners and other aviation professionals can contribute to solving a runway safety problem not largely of their doing, and why they must for the sake of the economic health of the aviation industry.
SFAR 93 and Minimum Altitudes Presentation
This was prepared in December, 2002, for the FAA Anchorage Flight Standards District Office Aviation Safety Counselors Annual Recurrent Training session. These are "printed" slides of the original PowerPoint presentation. It covers the specifics of Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) 93, which applies to the Anchorage, Alaska, terminal airspace, as it relates to altitudes and examines the interaction with other FAR's. For a copy of this presentation given on January 28, 2003, at Polaris Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, with CAP-specific information, click here.
SFAR 93 and Minimum Altitudes Article
This article was originally written for the FAA Alaska Region Pilot Safety newsletter. It covers a brief summary of the presentations listed above on the same subject, only in narrative form.

The Circle of Safety is an FAA/industry initiative intended to reduce the accident rate among air carriers in Alaska's rural areas by educating consumers and recognizing their role in improving air safety. The original document, which contains complete frequent traveler training, and additional information about this initiative can be accessed on the FAA Alaska Region Flight Standards District Office web site.
